Pineapple Basil Breeze
A little tropical sunshine with a fresh, unexpected twist.

A Little About This Drink
Pineapple has a way of making almost anything feel like a little vacation. It’s sweet, tangy, and full of tropical flavor. But the ingredient that makes this drink interesting is the basil. Most of us think of basil as something that belongs in pasta sauce or a caprese salad, but its fresh, slightly peppery flavor pairs beautifully with fruit. It’s one of those combinations that might sound a little unusual until you try it.
Pineapple Basil Breeze brings together the sweetness of pineapple, the brightness of fresh lime, and the wonderful fragrance of basil. A splash of sparkling water keeps everything light and refreshing. It’s an easy drink to make for a summer afternoon, a backyard barbecue, or just because you feel like treating yourself to something a little different. No tropical vacation required!

THE RECIPE
Prep: 5 minutes | Makes: 1 drink
Ingredients
- 3 oz pineapple juice
- 1/2 oz fresh lime juice
- 3 fresh basil leaves, plus extra for garnish
- 4 oz plain sparkling water
- Ice
- Fresh pineapple wedge for garnish (optional)
Instructions
Place the basil leaves and lime juice in the bottom of a sturdy glass.
Gently muddle the basil: Using a muddler or the back of a wooden spoon, lightly press and twist the leaves to release their fragrance and flavor. Avoid crushing them into tiny pieces.
Add the pineapple juice and stir gently.
Fill the glass with ice.
Pour in the sparkling water and stir just enough to combine.
Garnish with a fresh basil sprig and a pineapple wedge, if desired.
Add sparking water, ice and lime juice.
Make It Your Own
For a less sweet version, use a little less pineapple juice and add more sparkling water. If you enjoy a stronger citrus flavor, add another squeeze of lime. Fresh mint makes a delicious substitute for basil, giving the drink a cooler, more familiar flavor. You can also try a splash of coconut water for an extra tropical touch.

Make It Special
I make this drink just so I can use these beautiful pineapple shaped glasses!
Add a small pineapple wedge to the rim and tuck a fresh basil sprig alongside it. For a little extra flair, thread a couple of pineapple chunks onto a decorative cocktail pick. The bright yellow pineapple and fresh green basil make a beautiful combination, especially when the sunlight catches those sparkling bubbles.
What I Use
A soda maker such as SodaStream or DrinkMate makes it easy to have fresh sparkling water whenever you want it. Add your favorite juice after carbonating.
